In this episode of WickieMedia Subscriber Questions I’m answering a question by Tuneroneff who’s asking if an insert is pre- or post-fader.

There are pre-fader aux/sends that allows you to add parallel effects before sending the signal to the fader. Or you can also use the post-fader aux send/return. There is also “Insert FX” where the signal path is “serial” instead of parallel.

A PRE Fader aux is sent out BEFORE the volume fader (and usually the mute)… so any volume changes made on the fader are not reflected in the send. … POST fader sends are sent out AFTER the volume fader, so volume changes are reflected in this send.

A send is a way to route audio from an audio track to a bus. The output of an audio track can also be routed to a bus. A bus is a place where several audio tracks can be mixed together for some common processing.

A pre-fader Aux Send taps the incoming signal from the channel at a point that is before the channel fader. So, when the channel fader is down, the signal is still being sent to the aux bus. … In a live situation, pre fader and pre EQ sends are usually best where the mixer may be feeding stage monitors.
